Downtown Kilgore invites you to participate in creating a world where art is embraced and individuality is celebrated. Become a part of this exciting change through your visual art submission to the Kilgore Planter Project!

Featuring 25 cement planters in the historic downtown district, each work of art is created by local artists reflecting their interpretation of our theme "downtown Kilgore and Kilgore's history/future."

How to Submit

Submit Online

  1. Please review the "Frequently Asked Questions" section below for full details on all technical requirements for submitting your art;
     

  2. Your art must be HORIZONTAL in orientation which means that it must be wider than it is tall - submissions that do not meet this requirement will be disqualified;
     

  3. Please label your digital art file with the “title” and your name – for example, "Texan at Night-Mark Smith;"
     

  4. Your digital file must be a high resolution image of no less than 300 dpi (the higher the better);
     

  5. Your digital file must be submitted as a .jpg, .png or .pdf file;
     

  6. Your digital file must be less than 400MB in size; AND
     

  7. Include a brief (200 word maximum) “Artist Statement” explaining your art, your creative process and/or what the theme means to you.
     

  8. If making more than one submission online, you will need to create a separate entry for each one.
     

  9. Submission deadline is September 16, artists announced September 23.
     

  10. Planter painting begins October 14.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can participate?
    Artists, professionals, amateurs, students – everyone can participate. There is no submission or entry fee and there is no limit on the number of submissions

  3. What is the deadline for submission?
    September 16

     

  4. When will painting begin and need to be finished by?
    Painting will begin on October 14, and must be completed by November 1
     

  5. What is the theme of the submission?
    Downtown Kilgore and Kilgore's history/future
     

  6. What medium is appropriate?
    The planters will be painted and sealed to protect the artist's work

     

  7. Do I need to supply my own paint?
    No, the City of Kilgore will provide the paint materials 

     

  8. What are the selection criteria?
    All submissions must be an original concept and execution and not a copy or reproduction of the work of another. Final selections for inclusion in the project will be made by the Main Street Advisory Board based on artistic excellence and originality in reflection of our theme “downtown Kilgore and Kilgore's history/future"
     

  9. Do I need to submit my original work of art?
    No. Only a digital file of your original art work will be accepted. Due to the number received, submissions will not be returned
     

  10. May I make more than one submission?
    Yes. There is no limit to the number of pieces of art you may submit. There is no entry or submission fee 

     

  11. What is the acceptable size and digital formats for creating and submitting my art?
    Your original art may be any size; however, you must create or scan and submit it as a high-resolution (minimum 300 dpi) digital file (JPG, JPEG, or PDF). Your digital art must measure no less than 12.8” (325.12 mm) wide by 8.8” (223.52 mm) high, or if larger, it must contain the same proportions. All art must have a HORIZONTAL orientation as shown below.  Submissions which do not meet our technical requirements will be disqualified
     

  12. What size are the planters I will be painting on?
    Size of planters are as follows: Constructed of 2" thick molded/poured concrete, exterior circumference is 103 ", interior diameter is 28", height is 24"

     

  13. When will final selections be made and how will I be notified?
    Judging will take place in late September after the submission deadline and those selected for inclusion in the exhibit will be notified by email by early October. Due to the volume of submissions, only artists with entries selected for display will be notified individually
